A New Day

Last weekend we had a really rough day. Everything seemed to be working against us. A series of small but so frustrating events that seemed to send us on a tailspin of anger. We ended up fighting with each other and emotionally wrestling with God. Why lord? Why do these things have to happen? Why can’t the day just go smoothly so I can enjoy it?

Then I remembered that we cannot control everything that happens. We can try, but it most likely won’t go the way we want all the time. But the one thing we can always control is our response. How we respond to hard things will determine the outcome. Will we explode in anger, hurt others feelings and end up having regrets?  We could get mad and place blame, hold onto grudges and put our pride above everything else and it may result in getting even, or someone else getting what they “deserve” but after all of that, ask yourself how you feel? Like really, in your heart. How do you feel? 

People may treat us badly, they may say the absolute wrong thing at the worst time. But we can only be responsible for our own hearts and we have to live with them forever. We may even be justified in our initial reaction, but there’s no peace in being justified. Today I am reminded to take a breath before I respond, give grace where it is needed and move on. After all, My Heavenly Father did it for me. 
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Lamentations‬ ‭3:22-23‬ ‭NIV‬‬

It’s a new day, a new week and we can have a fresh start if we want to. Do you need to give someone grace? Or ask for forgiveness for yourself?

Don’t wait and don’t hesitate. But if you do, it’s ok because tomorrow is a new day too.
